Prerequisites for
application
Exceptionally
gifted and ambitious Humboldt University students should apply for the
available spaces at the Humboldt European Law School. Applicants must have
already successfully completed at least two semesters of law and be fluent in
English. At the time of application, it is not necessary for the student’s
French language skills to be at college-level-speaking-ability. However, if the
French language skills need to be improved students are expected to do this by
attending specialist foreign language classes at Humboldt University. (This
distribution is also admissible in reverse)
Students from other German universities are also welcome to apply and will be
accepted under the condition that they enroll at Humboldt University by the
beginning of the winter semester.
The vast majority of positions will be given to students who have completed
their second semester. Ten places are available for third and fourth semester students.
In individual cases one or two students of higher semesters will also be
accepted to the program. Applicants who apply for admission at the beginning of
their third semester must demonstrate they have successfully completed the
following classes: one basic background class in law as well as one basic course
each in civil law, public law and criminal law. Applicants who are applying for
the 5th Semester must have additionally participated successfully in events in
the following classes in civil law: work regulations law, commercial law,
family and inheritance law, property law and the law of civil court procedure,
as well as the public law courses: including international law and European law, general administrative law
and state liability law, construction law / local law and securities law, from
the module work (field) related additional qualification and a further event at
the European Law / European Private Law and Comparative Law. Their criminal law
educations must include financial crimes and criminal procedures.
Language skills: The program requires German students to be fluent in English
and French in order to be able to study successfully as a full time student abroad.
If the respective students only have basic language knowledge for one of these
languages, they are expected to take language classes, parallel to their other
studies at the Humboldt University, for example, by attending
discipline-specific language training for lawyers. However, please note the
additional work-load this entails, especially if you are applying after your
fourth semester.
Based on the documents submitted, we will decide using the criteria mentioned
above as to which applicants will be invited to a personal interview. As part
of the interview the applicant’s current and previous international experience
will be discussed. Applicants will be expected to expound upon their practical
experience and / or theoretical training (i.e. internships, time spent abroad,
etc.) The final decision will be made by
on the basis of the high school results, previous achievements in law studies,
foreign language skills and the interview.
Please note: Only
students who are studying for the first law degree are eligible to apply. It is
not possible to apply for only the masters programs.
